The Hinterlands
Steaming mountain ranges, turquoise geothermal pools, pristine crater lakes and vast lava fields
Come for:
- Rising towers of steam, sky blue hot springs (Hveravellir), remote mountain passes (Kjölur) and volcanic mountain ranges (Kerlingarfjoll)
- Pristine crater lakes (Öskjuvatn) and turquoise geothermal pools inside the Viti volcano and surrounding Askja caldera
- The beautiful Fjallabak Nature Reserve including its colorful rhyolite mountain peaks, inviting waterfalls, popular hiking trails and soothing geothermal baths (Landmannalaugar)
- Vast lava fields and home the Iceland’s most recent volcanic eruption (Holuhraun)
- The beautifully paired ‘sister’ waterfalls (Háifoss and Granni) along the powerful river Fossá surrounded by expansive mossy terrain
Do not expect
- An easy drive as roads are mostly gravel and can be challenging with steep inclines and tight bends - renting a 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended (and sometimes required)
- Accommodations other than a few huts along the main hiking trails and campsites at the base of mountains
